Dog Social FAQs
What is a dog social?
A dog social is a structured session where dogs and their handlers can practise their training skills around other dogs in a calm, controlled environment. The focus is on helping dogs learn to remain relaxed, focused, and responsive while other dogs are present, building confidence and real-life social skills.
What happens during a Dog Social session?
Each session follows a simple structure to help dogs settle and learn:
- We start with a scent game to help dogs relax and engage their brains
- We then walk together around the field, practising calm behaviour around other dogs
- We finish with a short training exercise to build useful skills such as focus, engagement and recall
The aim is to help you practise real-life training in a supportive environment.
Why are the dogs kept on long lines?
All dogs remain on long lines during the session, which are provided for you. This allows dogs the freedom to move, sniff and explore while still keeping everyone safe and comfortable.
Using long lines also helps prevent dogs from rushing up to each other and instead encourages calm behaviour and focus on their handler.
What if my dog reacts to another dog?
Firstly, please don’t worry — many dogs attending are still learning how to stay calm around other dogs.
The sessions are designed to give dogs the space they need, and we work at distances that help dogs stay successful. If a dog does react, we simply create more space and help you guide your dog back to focusing on you.
These moments are often valuable training opportunities, and you’ll be supported throughout the session.
Are these sessions suitable for nervous or reactive dogs?
These socials can be very helpful for dogs who need controlled exposure to other dogs while continuing their training.
Because the dogs are managed on long lines and we focus on calm activities rather than play, it creates a much more structured environment than typical dog meet-ups.
If you’re unsure whether your dog would be comfortable attending, feel free to get in touch before booking.
What should I bring to the session?
Please bring:
- Your dog wearing a comfortable harness
- Plenty of small training treats
- Your dog’s favourite toy if they enjoy playing
Long lines are provided, so you don’t need to bring one unless you prefer to use your own.
What results will I see if I attend regularly?
Regularly attending Dog Socials helps you and your dog build real-life training skills that are hard to practise on your own.
Over time many owners notice:
- Their dog becoming calmer around other dogs
- Better focus and engagement with them outside
- Improved confidence in busy environments
- More relaxed walks without constantly worrying about other dogs
These sessions are designed to give you a safe place to practise, make progress and build confidence together.
How many dogs do you have at once?
Sessions are limited to a maximum of six or eight dogs (depending upon which session you attend). Keeping the groups small allows each dog and handler to receive plenty of guidance and support, while maintaining a calm, controlled environment for learning.
Client Feedback
Claire understands dogs and their owners. She is assisting me with my 2 rescue dogs who are very reactive. 1 to 1s, doggie play, dog group walkies. She is calm and patient with both the dogs and their owners. Here is my dog with one of Claire’s dogs Lily.

When Claire started working with my rescue boy (on the right) he was HIGHLY dog reactive. He would try to escape from his harness by lunging, twisting and basically anything he could so he could get to the other dogs. Walking him wasn’t a pleasant experience at all and it became a chore and a battle every time. As a result we would stay at home more and more and we became very isolated. Within a couple of weeks of Claire working with him he was a totally different dog, no escape attempts, and walking him became enjoyable for both of us. He’s now getting walked a lot more and even has a doggy friend now. Thanks to Claire our world has opened up and become so much bigger, I can’t thank her enough.
